Mayor Celso Lobregat announced yesterday a proposal to establish a Science Park at Jardin Maria Clara in Pasonanca in an effort to provide a science and technology-oriented and a proven effective educational facility for Zamboanga City’s young and old populace.

The proposal came about after Mayor Lobregat himself found interesting and educational for students the still ongoing Science Centrum exhibits of the Sci-Fun Caravan Traveling Exhibition at Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School gymnasium.

Lobregat met yesterday with the city architects and engineers, City General Services Officer Rene dela Cruz and City Hall Chief Executive Assistant Mario Roca and discussed with them the proposed Science Park at Jardin vis-à-vis the area requirement, the design of the building and the science exhibits to be featured.

Under the proposal, the science park will have more or less science interactive exhibits to be supplied by the Science Centrum Fabrication, Inc. and developed by the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology (PFST).

In the executive summary of the proposal, PFST Executive Director May Pagsinohin said the interactive exhibits aim to enhance students’ learning of science concepts and processes which are effective tools in rediscovering science in its essence.

Once established, Zamboanga City will be the third local government unit to operate a science centrum. The two others are in Ilocos and Bicol, in addition to seven others assisted by PFST either DOST or school based in Cagayan Valley, Subic, Batangas, Naga, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro and Davao.

The proposed Zamboanga Science Park is expected to be an ideal venue for educational fieldtrip of students from all levels.

Earlier on, the mayor wanted some of the Sci-Fun Caravan exhibits put up at Paseo del Mar every weekend, but later thought of a permanent building or a science park instead. — Vic Larato
