The city government’s commitment to education is unwavering, as investments in education have reached P846.3 million within a four-year period from 2007 to 2011.

But Mayor Celso Lobregat said the city government will pursue more education-related projects and programs as long as he is mayor.

“And as I end my third term in 2013 the City Government’s investment in education and education-related projects will surpass the P1 billion mark,” he said.

The education projects and programs include the construction, repair of school buildings, fences, comfort rooms, stages, covered courts including the provision of computers, desks and chairs, books as well as hiring of teachers through the Local School Board (LSB) and the grant of allowances to mentors.

In 2011 alone, 25 school buildings with 219 classrooms worth P204.79 million were completed and on-going construction.

Included in the newly-constructed school buildings are five 3-storey 9 classroom buildings in Bolong, Culianan, Curuan and 2 in Divisoria.  There are also 16 newly repaired/on-going repair projects amounting to P25.4 million.

The P846.3 million education related projects include from 2007-2011 include  the construction of 102 school buildings worth P569.935 million; rehabilitation/ improvement of 238 school buildings worth P117.466 million; construction of 161 fences worth P58.560 million; construction of 84 comfort rooms worth P16.722 million; construction of 41 stage facilities worth P9.568 million; construction of 11 covered courts worth P20.133 million; construction of 29 multi-purpose buildings and other structures worth P16.539 million; construction of 15 covered walk/ sheds worth P5.981 million; construction of 2 waiting sheds worth P311, 140; construction of 9 pathway/ catwalk facilities worth P2.745 million; construction of 14 drainage systems worth P7.480 million; 13 road concreting and multi-purpose pavements (MPP) worth P2.923 million; 15 slope protection projects worth P13.808 million; 18 artesian wells/water tanks worth P3.628 million and 1 irrigation canal worth P503,626.

Aside from the buildings and infrastructures, another significant project initiated by the Lobregat administration in education is the provision of chairs. In 2009, the city introduced the 10Rs project, a multi-sectoral undertaking where dilapidated desks and chairs were repaired, reconstructed, rehabilitated and repainted into brand new chairs.

Of the over 4,000 dilapidated chairs collected from public elementary and secondary schools over 2,000 were 10R’d and distributed to different schools.
Starting last school year, the city government entered into a memorandum of agreement with the Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College (ZCSPC) for the production of 6,250 chairs for public elementary schools at a cost of P5 million and 2,500 chairs for public high schools at a cost of P2 million.

No less than Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro has praised the efforts of the Lobregat administration in addressing the challenges of the state of education. “I have only but good praises for the leadership of Mayor Lobregat and the entire Zamboanga City community for putting education on top of their priority.

Mayor Lobregat has emphasized that the momentum for the implementation of education-related projects and programs will continue and will remain ever-aggressive with the end in view of giving the youth a better future. - Sheila Covarrubias
