After 11 years when it was started by Congressman Erbie A. Fabian when he was vice mayor in 2000, the “Golpe-Golpe na Barangay” is now harvesting fruits and producing champion boxers.

Thus the observation made by Councilor Benjamin “ Nonong” Guingona after he personally witnessed the fight of Marvin Mabait at the Recom Dome in Amparo Subdivision in Caloocan City.

Mabait grabbed the Philippine Superflyweight Division title by winning against defending champion Rey Perez by unanimous decision.

Guingona commended Rep. Fabian for his consistent efforts and long hardship in pursuing the “Golpe- Golpe na Barangay” to produce local skilled boxers.
Mabait, a southpaw from Barangay Talon-Talon, joined “Golpe-Golpe Barangay some years back and later became a professional boxer under the Blue Stallion Promotion of Rep. Fabian.    Mabait’s professional boxing record is: 16 wins, 10 knockouts and  zero loss.

Mabait told this reporter that when he started boxing, he ate a lot of yellowripe banana to for potassium to build muscles.

Other Golpe- Golpe na Barangay alumni who recently became champions are Harry Tañamor of Barangay Tugbungan  who won a championship fight in Kazakhastan last year, Eumir Marcial from Barangay Lunzuran, who won a  gold medal in the prestigious Amateur International  Boxing  Association ( AIBA ) in Kazakhastan.  — Allen Abastillas
