Spanish Ambassador Jorge Domecq will keynote the grand celebration marking the 75th anniversary of the inauguration of Zamboanga as a Chartered City on February 26.

Mayor Celso Lobregat said the Spanish envoy has accepted the invitation of the City Government to grace the Dia de Zamboanga celebration which is considered a significant milestone in the city’s political history.

The mayor’s office through the City Tourism Division has finalized preparations for the Dia de Zamboanga and one of the highlight of which is the conduct of the 2012 Zamboanga International Film Festival, an exhibit of select Filipino and international films from February 25-27 at  Mindpro Cinema 1 and 3.

The grand celebration reels off with the observance of Dia de Roseller Lim, the first and only Zamboangueño senator on Thursday, February 9 which will be marked by a wreath laying event at the Lim monument in R.T. Lim Boulevard and the Awarding ceremonies for the Five Outstanding Zamboangueño Young Leaders (FOZYL).

Numerous other activities have been lined up to celebrate the 75th Dia de Zamboanga.

Mayor Lobregat said the visit of the Spanish ambassador to Zamboanga is intended to renew and strengthen relationships with Spain considering that Zamboanga City and Zaragozza Spain are sister cities based on a pact that both cities forged in 2008.

Since the signing of the Sisterhood agreement, various activities including programs aimed to promote and preserve Chabacano, a Spanish derivative language, have been undertaken to strengthen relationships.

Lobregat stressed that a living testament to the long and strong Spanish-Philippine relationship is the chabacano language, as majority of the people in Zamboanga speak, understand and converse in chabacano. — Sheila Covarrubias
