Defense Secretary Voltaire T. Gazmin commended the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Monday for its very successful operation against the elements of the Abu Sayyaf Group and Jemayah Islamiyah last February 2.

The carefully planned precision attack carried out by combined elements of the major armed services within the Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom) of the AFP resulted in the killing of 15 known terrorists who posed threat to peace and security in the Southeast Asian region, Gazmin said.

The defense chief said the deaths of Abu Sayyaf leader Gumbali Jumdail, Malaysian national Zulkipil Abdul Hir and Singaporean national Mumamda Ali, both belonging to the Jemayah Islamiyah, effectively decapitated these regional terror groups from pursuing their reign of terror.

“This operation is our response to calls for justice against these groups who mercilessly killed civilians and members of your Armed Forces. Our troops demonstrated the effectiveness of a cunning and intelligent operation to weed out these terror elements,” Gazmin added.
