The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) in coordination with the City Government of Zamboanga will mount the first ever Zamboanga International Film Festival from February 25-27 highlighting the 75th Dia de Zamboanga celebration.
The film festival, which forms part of FDCP’s Sineng Pamba, will be a 3-day exhibit of local and foreign indie films for free at the Mindpro Cinema 1 and 3. The movies that will be on exhibit are not usually screened on mainstream cinemas.
This is the second time that the city government is partnering with the FDCP for the mounting of Sineng Pambansa after last year’s successful film festival also held in conjunction with the Dia de Zamboanga celebration.

The Red Carpet Night will be held on Feb. 25 at 7pm at the National Museum Courtyard with the presence of dignitaries, film makers, directors, artists and other guests. The closing program will be held on Feb. 27 at the Brizza Hall in Lantaka at 7PM.

A sidelight in the Zamboanga International Film Festival will be the first short film competition with the theme “Kultura de Zamboanga”. Huge cash prizes await the winners- P30, 000 for the first place winner; P20, 000 for the second place winner and P10, 000 for the 3rd place winner.

The Short Film competition is open to all independent filmmakers at least 16 years old and must not have joined any major film competition. The filmmaker should be a resident of the City or any Province of Zamboanga with at least one year residency in Zamboanga City or Province of Zamboanga. (Proof of Residency must be presented). Each entry shall follow the theme: “Kultura de Zamboanga”; Any Digital Camera may be used (including cellphones) and the video should be at least Three (3) Minutes but not exceeding Ten (10) Minutes. Use of copyrighted music is prohibited, unless allowed by the owner of the material; Nudity, foul language, slur on religious belief, or any other form of offensive content shall likewise be prohibited.

The film may be in the native tongue or dialect must have readable English subtitles. All entries should be submitted in DVD format on or before February 16, 2012 deadline of submission, to the City Tourism Office, located at Paseo del Mar.

Meanwhile, other activities, initiated by the city government and other private groups, have been lined up for the 75th Dia de Zamboanga celebration. These activities include the Valentine Show “Un Noche de Amor Y Alegria junto con Nanette Inventor na Ciudad de Zamboanga on Feb. 14 at 7pm at the Garden Orchid Hotel; Zamboanga Food Festival on Feb. 17-18 from 5pm onwards at the Plaza del Pilar; Open-Cheer Dance Competition- Year 10 on Feb. 22 at 1pm at the City Coliseum; Rotary International’s 107th Anniversary from Feb. 23-29; 10th Achievers’  Night on Feb. 24 at 7PM at the Convention Center of the Garden Orchid Hotel; Dia de Zamboanga 15th Celso L. Lobregat Cup Open Dart Tournament on Feb. 24-25 from 6pm onwards at the Ram”s Garden Restaurant in Gov. Camins; Dia de Zamboanga Job Fair on Feb. 24 from 8am to 5pm at the Plaza del Pilar and ROTA-Run on Feb. 25 at 6AM in Pasonanca.

February 26, the Dia de Zamboanga will be a red letter day in Zamboanga with Spanish Ambassador Jorge Domecq as guest of honor. The activities will kick off with a  Drum and Lyre Competition (High School) at 1pm at the Joaquin Enriquez Sports Complex followed by the Grand parade from the City Hall premises to the Baliwasan grandstand area where the commemorative program will be held at 3pm. The competicion de selyo will also be held at the grand stand prior to the program.

At 6:30pm the same day, the Art Exhibit featuring local artists led by Rameer Tawasil will reel off at the Garden Orchid Hotel lobby.

The Dia de Zamboanga celebration kicked off Feb. 9 with the Dia de Roseller T. Lim, the first and only Zamboangueño senator. — Sheila Covarrubias
