Land Transportation Office-9 Director Aminola P. Abaton has ordered all district law enforcers  in the region to intensify the campaign against  colorum vans that operate as  public utility vehicle without franchise from the Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Abaton said most of these colorum vans station themselves in hotels, wharves, bus  terminals and airports where they pick up passengers in disguise as “special trip” anywhere in the different cities, provinces and municipalities of Mindanao.

“The primary concern of LTO is the safety and protection of the passengers because colorum vans are not covered with medical health insurance in case of accident,” Abaton pointed out.

On the otherhand, Abaton also directed all law  enforcers of the region to conduct intensive campaign and operations against motorcyclists  who openly violate the “no helmet no travel”  and the “no plate no travel”  policies.

The operations are being carried out separately by the LTO Law Enforcers Division and the Highway Patrol Group 9.

According to Abaton, under the law, any person cannot drive and backride a motorcycle without wearing helmet. Under the law, it is also prohibited to drive and backride wearing only slippers or sandals, sleeveless shirts and short pants.

On the “no plate no travel” policy, motorvehicles cannot  be driven if there is no plate number attached. Violations are subject to fines — First offense is P 1,500 and second offense is higher.

Abaton appealed to all motorists in the region to obey the Traffic Laws because the fines and penalties that they would for the violations are burdento their pockets.

Meanwhile, LTO Usec. Virgie P. Torres will visit Pagadian on February 16 to grace the 1st Senior Transportation  Regulation Officers Conference

Abaton said it is the 3rd visit of Torres in the region. After the conference in Pagadian City, she is also scheduled to meet transportation business organizations in Dipolog and Dapitan City. — Allen Abastillas
