November 25 to December 1 has been declared Week of Peace in Zamboanga, a period when every resident is asked to actively participate in all activities related to the observance.

The declaration is contained in Executive Order No. CL 369-2010 issued by Mayor Celso Lobregat.

All concerned government agencies and instrumentalities, including government owned and controlled corporations and members of the private sector and civil society, church –based organizations, schools, urban poor communities and other people’s organization are enjoined and encouraged to engage in relevant and meaningful activities prepared by the Peace Advocate Zamboanga (PAZ) and Inter-religious Solidarity Movement for Peace, based on the order.

In issuing the executive order, the mayor reiterated the City Government’s thrust in recognizing the common aspirations of Mindanaoans to live in peace, unity and harmony with each other regardless of status in life, religion or culture.

With the theme “Responsive and Responsible Governance: Key to Peace, Development and Sustainability”, this year’s celebration is loaded with series of activities such as the Elementary Administrators’ Peace Education Orientation at Marcian Business Center last November 6, Muñecas de Zamboanga: An Exhibition of History, Culture and Peace at Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) from November 15-27, Alliance of Peace Governments: Mindanao Youth Peace Forum at  ADZU on November 20 and the Children Solidarity Exchange with the theme, “Children of Peace” at ADZU on November 24.

The Grand Opening program will kick off with the Peace parade from Pettit Barracks to Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex (JFEMSC) on November 25. The other activities will include the Historical Journey: Dua’a Salamat, 5th National Sama-Badjao Movement Anniversary at Arena Blanco Elementary School on November 27, Peace Weaver Awards Night at Garden Orchid Hotel on November 28, Unveiling of Peace Movement  at Sta. Maria on November 29, Launching of PGM Peace Governance at WMSU on November 29, Peace Forum: Mindanao Peace Agenda at Western Mindanao State University on November 29, Zamboanga-Basilan Integrated Development Alliance at Marcian Garden Hotel from December 1-2, Peace Technology Massive Video Conference at WMSU Gym on December 1.

The Torch Parade will start at 5pm of December 1, at the Baliwasan grandstand and will end at the Paseo del Mar where the Music Festival will be held, International Day of Disability on December 3, PAZSalamat: Solidarity Thanksgiving Among the Youth Volunteers Young Peace Weaver Awards on December 4, International Human Rights Day On December 10 and International Day Against Child Trafficking on December 12.

The PAZ and SALAM Foundation started the observance of Week of Peace in Zamboanga in 1997 until it was adopted as a Mindanao-wide activity.
