Champion again!

The Western Mindanao State University Hawks Pep Squad bested the other four competitors for the 2012 Open Cheerdance Competition, avenging their loss to Pilar College who put to a halt their grand slam winning streak last year.

The Hawks, a group composed of students from the WMSU College of Engineering, took home P30, 000, medallions and a trophy as champion of the annual event that form part of the 75th Dia de Zamboanga celebration.

Mayor Celso Lobregat together with Councilors Benjamin Guingona III and Joanna Marie Mas personally awarded the prizes to the winning teams after the two-hour long competition held at the City Coliseum in Tetuan.

Second Place was awarded to Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology Pep Squad with P20, 000 cash prize and a trophy while Pilar College landed third with P15, 000 cash prize and a trophy.

The non-winning groups also received a consolation prize of P5, 000 each. They were The Juggernauts of WMSU and Zamboanga City High School Phoenix Squad-being the only participant from the secondary level.

As expected, the event was well attended, rousing the city’s coliseum with cheers and chants from the jampacked audience who came to support their respective teams.

The 2012 Open Cheerdance Competition has been one of most anticipated highlights of the Dia de Zamboanga revelry. It is now on its 10th year as a competition of graceful and snappy synchrony combined with breathtaking stunts. — Richard Aliangan
