Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday called on the public to fully support the International Film Festival set to be staged in Zamboanga City February 25-27 as a highlight to the 75th Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga celebration.

The mayor issued this call, as he reaffirmed support and cooperation to the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) in its thrust to ensure “that the economic, cultural and educational aspects of film are effectively represented at home and abroad”.

For the second time, the City Government is partnering with the FDCP under the leadership of Chairman Briccio Santos for the staging of a film festival to advance the FDCP’s undertakings and objectives following the successful Sineng Pambansa last year, which was also held in conjunction with the Dia de Zamboanga celebration.

The film festival this year will feature local and international independent films and will be screened from 9am to 8pm at Mindpro Cinema 1 and 3 on starting Saturday, Feb. 25 until Monday, Feb. 27.

“We invite everyone to please take part in the 2012 Zamboanga International Film Festival”, the mayor said, stressing that by supporting the film fest will mean the recognition of contributions and ingenuity and talent of film makers.

He emphasized that the holding of the Film Festival definitely adds color and significance to Zamboanga’s celebration of its 75th year as a Chartered City, a major milestone in its political history.

The film festival will feature local independent films: Urduja, Chico Y Rita, Thelma, Xenoa, Balangay, Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa, Teoriya, Red Shoes, Iliw and Biyaheng Lupa and Spanish feature films Tambien La Iluvia and La Mitad de Oscar, Yo Tambien and 18 Comidas. There will also be a special presentation of a finalist in the Zamboanga Short Film Competition.

The film fest will be graced by no less than Spanish Ambassador Jorge Domecq and other dignitaries and officials from the FDCP including film makers, directors, producers and artists of independent films.

“On behalf of the City Government and the constituents of Zamboanga, I warmly greet film makers, directors, artists, visitors and guests to the 2012 Zamboanga International Fim Festival which coincides with the 75th Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga celebration”, the mayor said.

FDCP chair Santos and Mayor Lobregat together with other guests will hold a press briefing regarding the film festival on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the City Hall conference room at 9am.

The Red Carpet night will be held Saturday at 7pm at the Museum Courtyard at the back of the Fort Pilar Shrine while the closing program will be February 27 at 7pm at the Brizza Hall of the Lantaka Hotel.

Also on Monday, Feb. 27, there will be a workshop on “Indie filmmaking in one day” sponsored by the FDCP and the city government at the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU). — Sheila Covarrubias
