Truck plunges into deep ravine: 5 dead, 7 injured PDF Print E-mail

Five people, including two teachers and a Liberal Party coordinator, were killed while seven were injured after the cargo truck they were riding plunged into a deep ravine in Barangay Tan-Awan, Baliguian, Zamboanga del Norte last Tuesday morning.

Joint retrieval operation carried out by Philippine National Police personnel and some volunteers resulted in the recovery of five bodies that were later identified as that of Julie Igtos, public school teacher of Mamad Elementary School, Daisy Mondina, also a teacher of Tamao Elementary School, Gary Vios, 18, Arnold Mamol, 25, and Miziel Alvarico, a Liberal Party coordinator.

Police also identified those injured as PO1 Nasser Sabtin of the Baliguian Municipal Police Station, Napoleon Ucab, a barangay kagawad, Rey Daclaran, Ronald Sandagan, Antonio Compis, Dionesia Atog, and Adelfa Caralde. They were treated at a hospital in Zamboanga del Norte.

Investigation disclosed that about 5 a.m., an Isuzu Elf truck with plate number YHM 382, owned by Cardin Quibong was on its way to Baliguian after the passengers attended a gathering in Dipolog City.

The truck was negotiating a slope part of the road when it encountered mechanical problem.

The driver lost control of the steering wheel sending the truck plunging into a deep ravine where it crashed amid trees and rocks. The passengers were thrown in different directions with impact.

Residents in the area who saw the accident reported it to the police and a retrieval operation ensued afterwards with the help of volunteers.

The municipal government of Baliguian immediately dispatched medical personnel to assist the wounded victims. — Noning R. Antonio
