COTABATO CITY  – Three persons were injured when an improvised explosive device went off on Governor Gutierrez Avenue, around 7pm on Thursday, city police chief, Senior Supt. Danny Reyes said.

The explosion occurred in front of the regional office of the Government Service Insurance System, a few meters away from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao compound.

Bai Epol Sandigan, a fruit vendor, said they were packing the fruits they were selling when they heard a blast.

Her husband Pendewata and 15-year-old nephew Bainot Pasandalan were among those wounded in the explosion.

The third wounded victim was identified as Jessie Tiangson, who was also brought to the Cotabato Regional Medical Center.

Mrs Sandigan said she was carrying her child at the time of the incident, adding they saw nobody who could have placed the bomb nearby.

Bomb experts from the Marines, Army and police arrived at the scene of incident. They immediately cordoned the place before recovering the shrapnel due to reports there was another bomb that had not detonated.

The investigators also recovered batteries and a mobile phone. But they were yet to identify the type of bomb used. — Ferdinand Cabrera/MindaNews
