“Win fair and square”.

Mayor Celso Lobregat issued this challenge to the almost 400 athletes who will compose the Zamboanga City delegation to the Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Athletic Association (ZPRAA) Meet set to be held in Dapitan City from March 11-16.

The mayor Tuesday afternoon led members of the City Council and education officials in a send off ceremony held at the multi-purpose covered court of the Baliwasan Central School, which has been the athletes’ headquarters for the past two weeks. The athletes together with almost a hundred coaches, trainers and chaperones depart for Dapitan Thursday night in time for the opening on Sunday, March 11.

Lobregat congratulated the athletes for having been chosen to represent the city in the Regional Meet, as he urged them to do their utmost best to excel in their individual events.

“We are giving our all out support to the athletes and we ask them to do their best and hopefully to win both in the elementary and secondary levels”, the
mayor said adding “but win fair and square and not by cheating”.

He said the city government will continue to grant incentives to athletes who will bring home medals. A gold medal is equivalent to an incentive of P1,000; a silver medal is worth P700 while a gold medal means an incentive of P500.

For so many years, both the elementary and secondary levels of the Zamboanga delegation retained their titles as champions in the ZPRAA until the past two years when the elementary level slid down to second place although the secondary level retained the title.

Also expressing their well wishes to the athletes and the coaches and trainers were Councilors Nonong Guingona, Myra Paz Abubakar, Rudy Lim, Mike Alavar, Lilia Nuño and VP Elago and DEPED officials headed by OIC City Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Maybel Tee, Athletic Manager Jane de la Torre and other officials.

The city government shoulders the delegation’s expenses for transportation, uniform and food.
