The City Veterinarian’s Office is offering free spay and neuter services today as part of the observance of the National Rabies Awareness Month.

The free services will be rendered at the City Veterinarian Office in San Roque from 9am to 5pm today on a first come first serve basis.

City Veterinarian Mario Ariola said spay and neuter services are forms of population control approach for dogs that include castration for male pets and ligation for female ones. The service is usually ranged at P1000 to P1, 500 if performed in private veterinarian’s clinic.

Although the official kick-off of the commemoration is on March 9, the free spay and neuter service is an early undertaking that form part of the series of relevant activities prepared to rev up the said observance.

On Friday, the opening program will reel off with a motorcade that will start at Pettit Barracks and will end at Baliwasan Central School where a short program and a film showing will follow.

The city will also collaborate with the Department of Education and Department of Health in the conduct of a series of symposia in various elementary schools to maximize awareness among pupils and students 15 years old and below- age brackets said to be the most vulnerable to rabies exposure.

Arriola is also reminding the public about the a year-round free vaccination service that can be availed at the City Veterinarian Office and the other 5 district offices in located in Quiniput, Taloptap, Manicahan, Culianan and Ayala.

The City’s Veterinarian is also advising all owners to register their pets to avoid future repercussions and at the same time contribute to make Zamboanga a rabies-free City.    — Richard Aliangan
