Police forces deployed to secure Basilan special poll PDF Print E-mail

The Basilan Police Provincial Office on Thursday deployed troopers to the different municipalities in Basilan for today's special election of provincial board members.
Basilan Police Provincial Director Sr. Supt. Cristeto Rey Gonzalodo disclosed that two contingents of the Philippine National Police's Special Action Force were sent to Lamitan and Maluso. They will be augmented by two companies of the 9th Regional Public Safety Battalion from Police Regional Office-9.
The SAF and troopers of 9th RPSB will serve the eastern area composed of the municipalities of Lamitan, Tuburan, Tipo-Tipo and other nearest municipalities.
The rest of the SAF and 9th RPSB will serve the western area composed of Maluso, Lantawan, Sumisip, Tabuan Lasa, Pilas island and other municipalities.
Sr. Supt. Gonzalodo said that Basilan is very unique because it has two districts for board members and one congressional district.
Gonzalodo said his men are always ready to serve as Board Election Inspector.
1st Marine Brigade Commanding General Brig. Gen. Eugene Clemen said his soldiers will still serve in the special election today  November 13 in partnership with the police and the Comelec to ensure a peaceful, honest and orderly election.
The 7th Marine Battalion Landing Team is already in Cotabato City and the whole 1st Brigade will transfer after serving the special election, according to Clemen .
Comelec-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Director Rey Sumalipao said the special election for board members in Basilan and for all candidates in 47 precincts in Lanao is being held because there was failure of election during the May 10 polls.
According to Sumalipao, there are 36 candidates running in Basilan.
Voters will choose four candidates for first district and four others for the second district. -- Allen Abastillas
