Nine teams coming from different cities and provinces throughout the country will officially compete today in the two-day “1st President’s Cup Level II Invitational Shooting Competition at “El Fuego Firing Range” in Sitio Corote, San Roque, this city.
Moses “Bong” Alier, president of El Fuego Gun Club and a known shooter in the city, said the competition is first to be held in the city among the best shooters in the Philippines under his leadership. Alier manages El Fuego Firing Range situated in a more than one hectare property in Barangay San Roque.
Cash prizes are at stake with trophies and medallions for the winners of this shootfest.
This level II match competition is the first sanctioned match competition sponsored by the club established by Mr. Alier.
In his welcome message to the participants who arrived in the city yesterday, Alier expressed confidence that the event will highlight not only the skills in precision, timing and agility but will exhibit discipline and promote camaraderie among shooters all over the country.
“Let this inculcate in all of us the value of responsible gun ownership. This is one of re-orienting our citizens in treating guns not as offensive and lethal weapons for destruction but weapons for excellence and true sportsmanship,” Alier said.
Shooting teams from Cebu led by Pablo Mazo, the group of shooters of Zaldy Mendez of Cotabato City, Dipolog City, Metro Manila, Ozamiz City, Cagayan, Iligan City, the combined team of Zamboanga City, Basilan and Jolo, and Zamboanga Sibugay have spent almost the whole day yesterday at the shootfest venue for the Range Officer’s briefing, matching and to familiarize the one of a kind firing range of Mr. Alier.
El Fuego Gun Club has hired the services of known shooters in the city to form part of the committee like Christopher Mandi (Assistant Match Director), Range Master Arnelio Inoferio and Ariel de Leon as the Statistic Officer. Mrs. Bernadette Alier, wife of Moses “Bong” Alier, serves as the over-all chairperson. -- Jimmy Villaflores
