The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China based in Cebu called on Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday morning hoping for strengthened ties between his country and Zamboanga and other local government units.

Zhang Weiguo arrived in Zamboanga yesterday to grace the induction of the new set of officers of the Zamboanga Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce headed by businessman Eddie Chua.

The consul was accompanied by Chua and the Chamber board of directors during his visit to City Hall. Also present to assist the mayor was Councilor Nonong Guingona.

The consul in a brief message stressed the good cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and the Philippines in various fields that include trade, economy, education and tourism.

He said China and the Philippines has a long history of friendship and hoped that the same will be improved and enhanced in the years to come.
“I am very happy to be here in Zamboanga City and I hope that measures can be taken to improve bilateral relations with the city and other local government units in the country”, Consul Weiguo said.

The consul extended an invitation to Mayor Lobregat for the possible establishment of bilateral relations with any local government unit in China, as he offered the services of his consulate office based in Cebu.

“Our consulate office will be very happy to help you in providing all information and other assistance you will need in case you will decide to open bilateral relations with any LGU in China”, the visiting Chinese official said.

On the other hand, Consul Weiguo admitted it is his first time to visit Zamboanga City but described Zamboanga as a beautiful and vibrant city. — Sheila Covarrubias
