Acknowledging the efforts of the Zamboanga Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce Inc. through humanitarian activities, Mayor Celso Lobregat expressed hopes that the group will continue to partner with the local government unit (LGU) in its programs for progress and development.

“The city government cannot accomplish what it has set out to do all by itself. It needs the support and cooperation of all sectors, particularly the business sector”, Mayor Lobregat said in a message during the induction of the new set of officers of the ZFCCCI headed by president Eddie Chua Thursday evening with Transportation and Communications Secretary Mar Roxas as guest of honor.

He continued: “You have shown your compassion and care for the city through your countless humanitarian activities in the past. I wish you will continue to partner with us to attain our shared goal of charting our City forward and onward.”

He stressed that the ZFCCCI has been a constant partner of the city government and that words are not enough to express his administration’s gratitude to the group.

On a personal note, the mayor also expressed elation over the election of Chua, a close friend as new head of the Chamber.

He described Chua as a very quiet and low profile person. “He is humble, unassuming yet highly respectable. His assumption to the presidency of the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce will certainly bring him out of his shell.”

“He has the potentials and the influence, not to mention the resources, yet his presence in the socio-civic circle has been very scarce. He has been involved in many civic actions—but quietly, yet effectively. He prefers to be in the background. He has shuns the limelight, but now, as president of this prestigious organization, whether he likes it or not, Eddie will be in the forefront of all activities of this organization”, the mayor said.

Chua takes over the ZFCCCI helm from Richard Chan who has served as president of the group for two terms. In his message, Chua vowed to bring in more dynamism and vibrancy into the Chamber in the exercise of his mandated duties and responsibilities. He likewise committed to work hand in hand with the local government under the leadership of Mayor Lobregat with the intention of improving the business climate in the city.

For his part, Sec. Roxas, a former senator, cited the significant contributions of the FCCCI in nation building. He called on the new officials to continue efforts to further help improve the country’s economy.

Also present during the induction ceremonies held at the Garden Orchid Hotel were Consul Zhang Weiguo of the People’s Republic of China, House Deputy Speaker Rep. Beng Climaco, District II Rep. Erbie Fabian, Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde, members of the City Council, FCCCI Federation president and other officials. — Sheila Covarrubias
