The former barangay chairman of Sta. Barbara and the son of a barangay councilman of Rio Hondo were shot dead in what were suspected as two related gun attacks at noon and at dawn yesterday.

The fatalities were identified as Harun Dimarunsing, 89, married, of Sta. Barbara and Al Jamar Rashid Baharain, 24, single, son of Kagawad Rashid Baharain of Rio Hondo.

A police report disclosed that Dimarunsing had just come out of the mosque in Sta. Barbara at past noon and was already aboard his Isuzu Crosswind van with his driver Roel Liboon, when a gunman later identified as Raz Dakman of Rio Hondo appeared and pushed Liboon aside, then shot Dimarunsing several times at close range.

Dakman hurriedly left the place and boarded a get-away motorcycle driven by a cohort but policemen near the place responded and shot him in the left leg.
Dakman fell down and was cornered by policemen while his companion sped away.

Dimarunsing and Dakman were rushed to the hospital but the elderly former village chief was declared dead on arrival.

Several hours earlier, Baharain figured in a gun duel with an unidentified man at Duston Drive, Sta. Catalina.

Baharain was shot in the body and was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

The suspect’s XRM motorcycle was recovered by the police at the crime scene.

Policemen recovered nine empty shells, two slugs, one magazine loaded with seven bullets of .45 pistol pistol and six spent shells of .9mm caliber pistol at the crime scene.

Police were still digging deeper to confirm a link between the two gun attacks. — Dan Toribio Jr.
