The House Committee on Health has approved on third and final reading a bill authored by Zamboanga City District 2 Congressman Erbie A. Fabian seeking to increase the bed capacity of the government-run Zamboanga City Medical Center from 250 to 500.
The Health Committee, chaired by Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo Maranon III approved House Bill  No. 425 during the resumption of the congressional committee hearings last Wednesday..
Rep. Fabian, a strong proponent and advocate of health, has batted strongly for its passage noting the need to expand the city’s medical center to help accommodate the increasing number of indigent patients in Zamboanga.
Fabian when notified of the approval expressed elation and extended his gratitude to colleagues in the committee for prioritizing the passage of the bill.
The 2nd District solon said health care is a basic social service that needs to be addressed by the government.
Health care costs have skyrocketed putting it out of reach of the ordinary people and the common wage earner.
The approved bill also sought to make available funds to support the medical center’s upgrade through a legislative budget appropriation.
The often crowded Zamboanga City Medical Center serves not only sick persons of Zamboanga City, but those from the neighboring provinces of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.
