The second terminal built by the Philippine Ports Authority at the Zamboanga City port will soon be fully airconditioned.

Port Manager Leonilo Miole disclosed that Terminal 2 is now under ongoing renovation and will soon feature some amenities.

Miole said the rehabilitation job is being carried out to give boat passengers and travellers passing by the port convenience and comfort.

Among the soon-to-be new features are floor tiles, comfort rooms and shower rooms for men and women, baggage counters, glass partitio,  transparent walls of the building and CCTV.

Terminal 2 will have also cooperative canteen to cater to  the food needs of the travellers and passengers.

Travellers can also sleep in the terminal by paying for cutbeds while waiting for their next trip to other cities and islands. They can do this provided they have vessel ticket and receipt fo the payment of wharf terminal fee.

Miole said there will be no immediate increase of terminal fee even after the renovation of the terminal. It is still P11 per passenger. Terminal 1 for passengers  and travellers of big interisland big commercial vessels will also soon have amenities like the ones in Terminal 2.

Another development being implemented by the PPA at the local port is the putting up of new  rubberdock fenders for the safeguard and protection of the hulls of vessels docking at the port.

The new rubberdock fenders cost some P20 million.

Meanwhile, PPA will establish a Help Desk for the Semana Santa (Holy Week) and summer vacation. Manned by the PPA Police, Maritime Police, Philippine Coast Guard and other law enforcers, the Help Desk will help and assist passengers and travellers passing by in the wharf.    Paramedics will be on standby at the Help Desk on call for 24 hours. — Allen Abastillas
