The president of Universidad de Zamboanga (formerly Zamboanga A.E. Colleges) was shot dead by gunmen riding on a motorcycle along Maestra Vicenta St, in Sta. Maria shortly before 1 p.m. yesterday.

Arturo “Archie” Fargas Eustaquio III also known as Hadji Arturo Ammar Eustaquio,III sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the body and was rushed to the Zamboanga AE Community Hospital where he expired at past 1 p.m. while undergoing treatment.

The gunman used a .45 caliber pistol.

A police report disclosed that Eustaquio came out of his residence at Maestra Vicenta aboard a red motorcycle and was heading towards the Sta. Maria main road when one of two men aboard another motorcycle opened fire on him in front of a car wash center.

It was learned that the two men had waited for him along the road.

Police said that based on the spent shells recovered at the crime scene, the gunman shot Eustaquio five times. His motorcycle crashed and he fell on the road.

The gunmen’s motorcycle sped towards the direction of the city proper.

Police investigators were disappointed because they could not get any leading statements from several people who witnessed the shooting.

City Police Director Sr. Supt. Edwin De Ocampo said that investigators from the Sta. Maria police station were on hot pursuit operations against the killers.

Several angles are being looked into by probers on the killing of the UZ president.

Sources however said that the slain Eustaquio has recently turned over his position to another school executive, but this could not be confirmed yet.

The slain Eustaquio is one of six children of the late Arturo Eustaquio Sr., founder of Zamboanga AE Colleges and one of the towering figures of Zamboanga City in the 1960s and 1970s. His mother belongs to the prominent Fargas family of this city.

The elder Eustaquio founded the school on October 12, 1948.
