Basilan Vice Governor Al-Rashid Sakkalahul has commended former 1st Marine Brigade commanding officer Brig. Gen. Eugene Clemen who has been appointed as deputy commandant of the Philippines Marines for his contribution and peace effort in making the province peaceful during the past three elections -- May 10 national and local elections, Aug. 25 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan election and the special election for board members held on Nov. 13.
Sakkalahul said the three elections were generally peaceful and there was no major incident that has harmed the people or the destruction of properties.
According to Sakkalahul, Brig. Gen. Clemen and his men are indeed team players and had worked harmoniously with the different local leaders and the Philippine National Police in Basilan under Sr. Supt. Cristeto Rey Gonzalodo as well as the Philippine Army.
Sakkalahul said that Clemen is a good leader when he became the officer-in-charge of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao Command after Rear Admiral Alexander Pama was re-assigned to the National Headquarters in Manila.
Clemen paid his last courtesy call on Sakkalahul before he turned over Camp Luis Biel in Tabiawan to the new 1st Marine Brigade commander Col. Alexander Balutan and to the Philippine Army leadership.  The 1st Marine Brigade then proceeded to its new assignment in Central Mindanao with PC Hill in Cotabato City as their headquarters.
Clemen expressed gratitude to all the leaders of the province led by Gov. Jum Akbar, to Sr. Supt. Gonzalodo, Army troopers and the people for extending their help to the Philippine Marines in their mission and task to bring peace in province. -- Allen Abastillas
