Fifteen inmates of the Dapitan City Jail held three other inmates hostage at noon last Saturday.

The three victims sustained injuries in the body and were taken to the hospital after the hostage drama.

A police report disclosed that Oscar Calasang, leader of the Batang Mindanao 29, together with 14 other detainees, who were armed with improvised knives seized Victor Mejias, Rey Hapole and Flaviano Sagapsapan. Tension gripped the jail during the hostage drama.

Authorities led by Insp. Nathaniel Aljas of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology negotiated with the hostage takers and asked them to  release their co-inmates.

After some talks, the hostage-takers freed the three victims and surrendered their weapons.

Mejias, Hapole and Sagapsapan were taken to the Rizal Memorial Hospital with injuries in their body.

Initial investigation disclosed that the 15 inmates figured in a dispute with the three other inmates that resulted in the hostage taking.

After the incident, BJMP personnel inspected all the detention cells and seized six more improvised knives kept by the inmates.

All the 165 inmates were accounted for, the report said. — Dan Toribio Jr.
