A soldier was killed, while 26 others were wounded in a landmine explosion in Barangay Baiwas, Sumisip, Basilan yesterday morning.

A military report disclosed that soldiers of the Army’s 13th Scout Ranger,  4th Scout Ranger Battalion were on a combat patrol at the vicinity of Abong-Abong Peak in Barangay Baiwas around 8:40 a.m. when their vehicle stepped on a landmine planted by the Abu Sayyaf Group.

Twenty seven soldiers were confirmed wounded and one of them was dead on arrival in a hospital, while two of them were in critical condition. They were brought to the hospital while other troops continued their combat patrol and hot pursuit operations against ASG bandits.

Western Mindanao Command chief Maj. Gen. Noel Coballes said that the vicinity of Abong-Abong had been an ASG stronghold before it was over run by troops of the 4th Scout Ranger.

Coballes added that the ASG made the area almost impenetrable.

The Wesmincom chief added that they are exerting efforts to clear the area of ASG guerrillas  along with their landmines and IEDs to ensure that civilians would have safe access to Abong-Abong for farming. — Dan Toribio Jr.
