The 2012 Zamboanga Summer Festival kicks off today with the 10th Zamboanga Kite-flying festival at 9am at the Paseo del Mar.

Over a hundred kite flying enthusiasts are expected to converge at the Paseo for the exciting and entertaining kite flying contest initiated by the City Government through the City Tourism Division in cooperation with the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Zamboanga.

The competition will have various various categories where the winners will receive cash prizes and trophies. And while the kite flying enthusiasts are engaging in the competition, the spectators will have the chance to participate in the side events that include the domino galore and juego de antes such as tumbahan lata, ciatung, lagasan de pies-pies (kadang-kadang), tubigan (patintero), bagul, sack race, Gerry base and the longest line.

The Summer Festival is an annual activity initiated by the City Government intended to involve the community and to provide wholesome entertainment to local residents as well as visitors during summer.

The events this year include the Mundo de Fotografia from April 20-22 at 8am-5pm at the Garden Orchid Hotel organized by Canon and Camera Club; the 6th Encuentro de Banda Musical (Battle of the Bands) on April 21 from 6pm onward at Paseo del Mar; 1st Perlas Tee Golf Tournament from April 21-22 (8am to 5pm) at the Zamboanga Golf Course in Calarian; Zamboanga Peninsula Photo Caravan from April 23-27 and Operation Tuli on April 26 from 8am to 12nn at the City Health Office.

April 26 is Dia de Ma’am Caling in honor of the birth anniversary of the late mayor Maria Clara Lobregat. The celebration will be highlighted by the commemorative mass at 4pm at the Holy Trinity Parish in Pasonanca and commemorative program and awarding ceremony of the 2nd Maria Clara Lobregat Awards of Excellence at 5pm at the Jardin Maria Clara in Pasonanca.

Other activities for the Summer festival include the 1st Zamboanga Summer Food Festival from April 27-28 from 5pm onwards at Plaza del Pilar; Zamboanga Duathlon Challenge 2012 on May 5 from 8am onward; General Vicente S. Alvarez Essay Writing Contest on May 11 at 9am at the City Hall conference in observance of Dia de Gen. Vicente Alvarez on May 18 which will also be highlighted by the commemorative mass at 4pm at the Fort Pilar and the program at 5pm at the Plaza Gen. Vicente Alvarez.

The Summer Festival was continues on until May 19 when the Fiesta Engrande na Paseo del Mar from 8am onwards at Paseo del Mar. It will culminate on May 26 with the 10th Festival de la Bellas y Flores which will start with a parade of sagalas and arco at 5pm from Ledesma Street and will end at the Paseo del Mar where a program will be held at 6pm.

The activities are mostly sponsored by the city government but several other events are organized by NGOs and private groups. — Sheila Covarrubias
