A top official of the Department of Health (DOH)-Manila has only good words for Zamboanga City, as he declared that the department has not made a mistake in choosing the city as venue for the national staff meeting.

“We love to go to Zamboanga, it’s been a long time since we came here and we did not make a mistake in holding the DOH National Staff Meeting (NSM) here”, Health Assistant Secretary Enrique Tayag said in an interview with reporters on the last day of the NSM yesterday.

The DOH-NSM, held at the Garden Orchid Hotel, brought together all centers for health development directors, chief of hospitals and other members of the DOH family through the Population Commission as well as representatives from different local government units in the country. Governors from Leyte,
Davao del  Norte and Zamboanga del Sur attended the event held from April 17-19.

Tayag said Zamboanga City has a lot to offer in terms of tourist attractions, food establishments and many other potentials that contradicts the negatice impression that some people have prior to coming to the city.

“You have a beautiful city and w hope to come back very soon,” the DOH official said.

Mayor Celso Lobregat together with some members of the City Council toured the DOH-NSM participants Wednesday night after the city government sponsored dinner.

Tayag said he and the other visitors are impressed with the numerous development projects being undertaken by the Lobregat administration.  “Mayor [Lobregat] invited us to Paseo del Mar, pinakita sa aming yong dancing fountain, nakakainggit talaga at kumain kami ng ‘Knicker-bocker’ at dinala kami sa barter. The mayor showed us that Zamboanga is more than what the people think of the city”.

Other participants to the NSM likewise expressed admiration to the potentials and the many things that Zamboanga can offer.  They said the ongoing developments in the city are very much at par with those in major cities.

Meanwhile, Dr. Tayag said the 2-day NSM in Zamboanga tackled the directions of the DOH, the problems the department is encountering and the goals that the agency hopes to achieve  during the year. — Sheila Covarrubias
