Mayor Celso Lobregat and some members of the City Council yesterday motored to barangay Labuan in the west coast to distribute cash assistance to the 136 families displaced by the fire that hit the area March 10.

A total of P616,000 were released by the city government for families whose houses were either totally or partially damaged during the conflagration. Families whose houses were totally damaged received P5,000 each; those whose houses were partially damaged as well as those considered house sharers received P3,000 each.

Mayor Lobregat was assisted by Councilors Rudy Lim, Myra Paz Abubakar, Nonong Guingona, Luis Biel III and Rogelio Valesco Jr. during the distribution held at the Labuan barangay hall. Facilitating the release were City Social Welfare Officer Francisco Barredo and staff, a representative from the City Treasurer’s Office and the Labuan barangay Council headed by chairman Roland Maravilla.

Prior to distribution, Mayor Lobregat said the cash assistance is intended to help alleviate the victims’ plight. “Este ayuda que ta dale el ciudad hinde para paga el casa que ya quema, si no para usa ustedes compra cosas para cusina”.

He also stressed that the city government in coordination with the barangay council is looking for ways and means on how to relocate the affected families. He likewise emphasized that the City Government is bent on ridding the shorelines and all other environmentally hazardous areas from structures or houses, as he stressed that the policy is for public safety.

Most of the houses burned in the March 10 incident were located along the Labuan shoreline.

“We are looking for solutions and we give assistance to you so you can move forward”, the mayor added.

On behalf of his constituents, Maravilla expressed gratitude to Mayor Lobregat for the continuous assistance given to the fire victims.

He said the cash assistance as well as previous relief goods and other support given to the victims are very much appreciated by his constituents.
