Senator Chiz Escudero said it was the duty of the government to provide quality education as he frowned at the annual cuts in the subsidy to state universities and colleges (SUCs) to make them financially independent.

According to Escudero, declining state spending on SUCs to make them self-sufficient only compromises the quality of education that students deserve.

“Hindi naman negosyo ang edukasyon, hindi naman negosyante ang mga head ng mga state universities and colleges para maging dalubhasa sila na pakitain at kumita ang kanilng mga unibersidad,” Escudero said in an interview over DXSO Radyo ng Bayan in Marawi City recently.

The senator said he had been pushing for the increase in SUCs’ budget, but the government only managed to allocate P22 billion for 2012 as opposed to the proposal of P39 billion by the Commission on Higher Education.

“Kada budget hearing, away ‘yan bago ipasa.

At the 47th commencement exercises of the Mindanao State University (MSU) Marawi Campus  where Escudero was speaker, he again pressed for higher budget spending for the education  sector, particularly the SUCs, to ensure that students will get sufficient quality education.

In the same occasion, Escudero announced that he would earmark P5 million of his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) to MSU to help it complete a two-story pre-university center in Marawi.

“Kaunting tulong lang ito dahil alam naming bumababa ang budget ng state universities and colleges at sa pamamagitan ng aming pondo ay makaambag man lang doon sa binaba ng budget,” Escudero said.
