Zamboanga Peninsula governors and members of the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) have expressed satisfaction over the extensive and comprehensive discussions that took place during the Council meeting presided by Chairman Mayor Celso Lobregat Tuesday afternoon.

At least eight resolutions concerning peace and security in Western Mindanao were approved during the five-hour long dialogue held at the Garden Orchid Hotel.

Sibugay Governor Rommel Jalosjos thanked Mayor Lobregat for the opportunity given to him and the other local government executives from the region to voice out their sentiments and problems besetting their areas of jurisdiction during the meeting.

“As you know my past experience with RPOC has not been very positive and I came to this RPOC meeting with apprehensions about what will be discussed but I’d like to apologize, my apprehensions are not true. We are all here as one as a region to find out simple solutions for sustainable peace and order in the region,” Gov. Jalosjos said in a press briefing after the RPOC meeting.

He said he is thankful that LGU executives to include governors and mayors freely participated in the discussions with the aim of achieving the same common goal that is not restricted by political boundaries.

The RPOC meeting Tuesday was the second since Mayor Lobregat assumed as its chairman February 15. It tackled updates on the general peace and order situation in the region that included the abduction of Salug, Zamboanga del Norte Mayor Jeffrey Lim, the killing of Universidad de Zamboanga president Dr. Arturo Eustaquio III and the NPA raid at the Tigbao Police Station. Also part of the discussions were briefings on the Mindanao Peace and Development Security Committee and the ongoing anti-illegal drugs operations in the region.

Mayor Lobregat said thorough discussions were held on every agenda laid on the table during the meeting. He said the meeting had the participation of the 3 governors in region 9 as some issues and concerns have to be solved on a regionwide or inter-region basis.

Zamboanga del Norte Governor Rolando Yebes said the meeting presided by Mayor Lobregat and attended by top military and police officials in Region 9 was very fruitful and productive, as members and guests actively participated in the discussions.

“Thank you for a very good day for all of us in our discussions on the different peace and order situations in our respective provinces and cities and in the whole Region 9 and I hope this will be the order of the day in every (RPOC) meeting that we will have,” Gov. Yebes declared. “We thank Zamboanga City and Mayor Lobregat for hosting the meeting and let us work for the good of our people”.

Antonio Cerilles, Zamboanga del Sur Governor thanked the Zamboanga City government through Mayor Lobregat for hosting the RPOC. “We have tackled so many issues starting at 1:30pm on efforts to maintain peace and order in the region”.

As chairmen of the Peace and Order Councils in their respective areas, the governors and other local government executives in the region are pulling efforts to help bring about peace and prosperity in the Western Mindanao. “We have done our best and we look forward that the end result will be for the best of the region”.

Top military and police officials present and who briefed the members about the prevailing peace and order situation in the region included Western Mindanao Command chief MGen. Noel Coballes, DIPO Director PCSupt. Manuel Barcena, Police Regional Director PCSupt. Napoleon Estilles, Zamboanga City Police OIC Director PCSupt. Mario Yanga, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA-9) Director Adzhar Albani, DILG Regional Director Faizal Abutazil and several others. — Sheila Covarrubias
