To develop and strengthen the science and technology (S&T) production sector, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has recently approved the financial assistance for a seaweed project here.

The project “Establishment of Seaweeds Noodles Processing Facility” has received P242,730 from the DOST’s Grants-in-Aid (GIA) Program.

Specifically, DOST-9’s assistance to the facility involves system development, process improvement and manpower development.

Beneficiary of the project is the local government of Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

The said project aims to help local residents develop livelihood activities and generate income through the application of Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI)-developed seaweeds-based noodles technology.

The objective of this intervention is to curb malnutrition and mitigate hunger in poor rural communities in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

The project is part of the “Siglang Pinoy” hunger mitigation program of DOST-FNRI.

Through the project, Ipil is expected to generate more income as well as help improve product quality and productivity, lessen malnutrition incidence and increase employment and business opportunities for the community. — Thelma E. Diego/DOST/PIA 9-ZBST
