A member of a notorious lawless group was killed while another was arrested in an armed encounter in Barangay Mamagon, Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay at dawn last Saturday.

Police Regional Director Chief Supt. Napoleon Estilles identified the fatality as Batoto Abdusalam alias Halifa Omar. Arrested was Hader Magatos.

A police report disclosed that men of the Provincial Public Safety Company and soldiers of the Army’s 44th Infantry Battalion went on an internal security and manhunt operation against the group of Wanning Abdusalam around 2 a.m.

Agents of the Provincial Intelligence Group and the Army’s 53rd Infantry Battalion acted as blocking force on all possible exit points.

At 3:30 a.m., government forces clashed the lawless group od Wanning Abdusalam, Ogis Jakarta and Putot Jakaria.

The exchange of gunfire lasted for several minutes killing Batoto Abdusalam. 

Magatos was arrested and a 12-gauge shotgun was confiscated from his possession.
Magatos was taken to the Army’s 102nd Brigade headquarters for tactical interrogation.
Abdusalam’s group was responsible for the series of kidnappings and other atrocities in Zamboanga Sibugay.–Dan Toribio Jr.
