Mayor Celso Lobregat has ordered a thorough investigation into the boulder incident in Barangay San Roque that killed two people yesterday afternoon.

Mayor Lobregat, who rushed to the scene after receiving the report, said the police together with the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) and other concerned agencies should determine the real cause of the incident.

The bodies of Roderick Cabugsa and Miguel Gamores were dug up one after the other late afternoon, some few hours after the quarry site caved-in about noontime.

The two victims are said to be residents of Malagutay.

Mayor Lobregat likewise instructed City Social Welfare Officer Francisco Barredo to provide all the necessary interventions for the burial of the victims as well as the other assistance to the victims’ families.

Two city government’s back hoes were dispatched to the area to help pluck out the victims.

Reports say that the area is an abandoned quarrying site and that some people use it for illegal quarrying activities.

Rescuers found difficulty in plucking out the victims as voluminous amount of quarry materials have caved in.

As this developed, City Social Welfare Officer Francisco Barredo said the city government will shoulder the expenses for the burial of the victims.

Assessment of the families of the victims will be done today to determine what other assistance is needed. — Sheila Covarrubias
