A big boulder collapsed burying two men alive at a quarry area in Sitio Pasay, San Roque at noon yesterday.

The fatalities were identified as Roderick Cabugsa and Michael Gamores, both residents of Malagutay.
Cabugsa’s body was retrieved hours later and was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Gamores’ body was dug up several hours later.

Mayor Celso Lobregat supervised the retrieval operation with Red Cross paramedics and barangay officials of San Roque.

Edwin Resol said he, Cabugsa, Gamores and Rodel Francisco, all from Malagutay, were extracting landfill in the quarry site at past 12 noon when the boulder tumbled down covering Cabugsa and Michael Gamores.

Resol said he was few meters away from the site while his three companions were  beyond a quarry hole where the boulder collapsed.

When he saw the boulder was slowly moving, Resol yelled at his three companions to run but it was too late because the boulder suddenly tumbled down covering  his buddies.

The incident was immediately reported to authorities that led to the search and rescue operation.

Lobregat rushed to the place and supervised the retrieval operation until late in the afternoon.

Resol disclosed that they were hired to work at a house construction, and they went to the quarry site to get some landfill.

Resol admitted that they don’t have any permit from the concerned government agency  to conduct the quarry in the area. — Dan Toribio Jr.
