Some 1,670 mostly high school students composing the second batch of the Summer Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) will commence their 20-day work today, May 3.

Mayor Celso Lobregat and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Regional Director Sisinio Cano will spearhead the orientation of the students set to start at 9am today at the City Coliseum in Tetuan.

Mayor Lobregat will also lead in the recitation of SPES beneficiaries’ oath of office or “Juramiento de un Empleado de Gobierno”.

As SPES beneficiaries, the students are considered government workers and are bound by the labor standards and ethics in government, according to City Social Welfare and Development Officer Francisco Barredo, whose office facilitates the implementation of the SPES program.

The first batch of beneficiaries, composing of 1,560 college students commenced their summer job April 10 and will end on May 8.

For the first year, each beneficiary will be receiving a salary of P200 a day or a total of P4,000 compensation for the entire program. The amount is expected to be used for the students’ enrolment and matriculation fees in June.

The SPES is a nationwide program jointly undertaken by the local government unit and the DOLE on a 60-40% sharing in the payment of salaries.

For this year, Mayor Lobregat has allocated P9 million for the SPES program while the DOLE has appropriated P5million for the program in Zamboanga City. — Sheila Covarrubias
