A village chief yesterday said it is the clamor of many people in the city that District 1 Congresswoman Beng Climaco should run for mayor in the 2013 polls.

Tugbungan barangay chairman Agustin Graciano Jr.’s pronouncement aired over TV-11’s Dateline Zamboanga Tuesday jibed with Mayor Celso Lobregat’s statement that Cong. Climaco is the name that crops up whenever he asks people the questions who should run for mayor in 2013 and who is the strongest and most formidable candidate that should be fielded now that an outside force has declared intentions to seek the top local government elective post.

Graciano said as somebody who is ingrained with the grassroots or barangay people, he can easily know the people’s pulse concerning the forthcoming mid-term elections. “Como came taqui ahora na barangay, el masa, pronto ba kita sabe el pulso, si cosa el mobimiento aqui abajo”.

“Como el cuanto na maga ocacion ta man junto yo con el maga barangay officials, deberasan el nombre di Ma’am Beng (Climaco) ta sale gayot como amo el que debe pone, para entalcaso que el un grupo, aquellos abla sila hinde de aki ay bene para planta el di ila grupo (na eleccion),”, Graciano said candidly.
Personally, he said, it is also his opinion that Cong. Climaco will be a strong contender for the mayoralty post because of the many qualities that she possesses.

The other day, Misael “Doglo” Bernardo, barangay chairman of Maasin strongly appealed to Climaco to run for mayor in 2013 stressing that it is also the consensus of other sectors and individuals he talked with.

Bernardo declared that he will support Climaco, if and when she decides to run for mayor in 2013, as she has the quality of a good leader similar to what he has seen in the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat.

While running for mayor will compromise Cong. Climaco’s present position as House Deputy Speaker for Mindanao, Bernardo said it will be a matter of being Zamboangueno and heeding the call of many to help protect and preserve Zamboanga.

Mayor Lobregat is now on his third term, thus, can no longer run for the same position in the 2013 elections. — Rey Carbonel
