The regional office of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has cited the City Government under the leadership of Mayor Celso Lobregat for its steadfast efforts in supporting the fight against the use of prohibited drugs in the city.

PDEA-9 Regional Director PSup. Adzhar Albani in a message read for him by Darmalyn Jumlail during the opening program of the Anti-Drug Abuse and Prevention Month celebration Friday, said Zamboanga City has remained unrelenting in its effort to help in the campaign against the drug problem.

A year ago, Zamboanga was named Most Outstanding Local Government Unit (LGU) by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) for our tremendous contributions to the country’s relentless campaign against the drug menace, he said.

The local government in coordination with the police, PDEA and other law enforcement agencies, has sponsored seminars and sumposiums and other activities intended to reduce or minimize the incidence of drug abuse and its negative consequences.

The PDEA, according to Albani, will remain aggressive in its mandate to crackdown on all suspected drug pushers and users, despite the numerous challenges it faces.

Meanwhile, City Administrator Antonio Orendain, Jr. who represented Mayor Lobregat during the program at the City Coliseum called on the youths to take extra care not to fall prey to drug pushers stressing that substance use may give short-term euphoria but it will not send troubles away.  “Drugs will only aggravate them. Furthermore, it will only put your health in peril, which is one reason – a strong one at that – why the use of these substances is forbidden.”

He said: “I enjoin the active participation of our young leaders who should serve as examples.  Organize activities where the youths can spend their time and energy productively.”

The mayor likewise lauded PDEA’s commitment to the cause saying that drug enforcers put their lives and their families at risk to bring down drug syndicates, destroy drug dens and laboratories, put drug pushers behind bars and eliminate the trade of all forms of narcotic drugs.

And to show the anti-drug forces the city’s gratitude, Mayor Lobregat said the residents should divulge whatever information they have on any illegal activities.  “Let us do our share in this fight”.

The Anti-Drug Abuse Use and Prevention program Friday kicked off with a motorcade from downtown to the City Coliseum in Tetuan where the program was held. The program is themed  “Think Health, not Drugs”.
