The local chapter of Partido Demokratikong ng Pilipino-Laban (PDP-Laban) led by its Chairman Councilor Rommel Agan (District 2) has expressed gratitude to Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel for extending to the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) medical assistance amounting P1 million intended for its indigent patients.

A memorandum of agreement (MOA) was signed between Pimentel and ZCMC Director Romeo Ong last Sunday signaling the immediate availability of the fund to assist indigent patients who could not afford to settle hospital bill and buy needed medicines.

The fund came from Pimentel’s Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) for “soft” projects like scholarship program, hospital assistance for the indigents and many others.

Pimentel, who is the national president of PDP-Laban, has authorized Mayor Celso Lobregat, Councilor Agan and some other local party mates to become the recommending authority before the approval of the financial assistance by ZCMC.

“Kung sino talaga ang nangangailangan ng tulong for hospital bill at pambili ng gamot, they can just see any of the authorized individuals,” Pimentel said.
Dr. Ong however clarified that the assistance has its limitation so that others can also avail of Pimentel’s P1 million budget.

“We cannot just give out all the needed assistance to one patient. It has a limitation and everything should be assessed first by our Medical Social Services before granting the required financial aid,” Ong explained.

Agan said that Pimentel’s additional fund for ZCMC is of great help to the thousands of poor residents, who normally cue at City Hall, City Health Office and even at the Sangguniang Panglunsod for medical assistance.

“No matter who the signatories are, what is important is that, we can already give assistance to the residents through Senator Pimentel’s great help to the city,” Agan said.

Pimentel’s fund can also be used by indigent patients from other parts of the region, Dr. Ong clarified.

Aside from Pimentel, Senator Trillanes, District 2 Congressman Erbie A. Fabian, Congresswoman Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar (D-1) and the Office of Mayor Celso Lobregat have also allocated sufficient funds for the same  purpose, Ong said. —Jimmy Villaflores
