The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has tagged the Sangali-Pitogo 138 KV lines in Zamboanga City as having the worse problem in terms of losses of its tower parts perpetrated by thieves over the year.

In a press briefing last week, NGCP officials said that in so far as Zamboanga Peninsula is concerned, towers connecting the lines from Barangay Sangali to Pitogo in Barangay Sinunuc in the west are the targets of thieves who pilfer the towers of solid iron and plates, imported bolts and aluminum wires and sell them to buyers.

“For Western Mindanao, Zamboanga is in the alarming level. Marami ng mga incidents at paulit ulit pa. That’s why, our security department has strengthened their security programs here in closed coordination with the PNP and AFP,” an NGCP official said.

Of the P200,000 worth of stolen parts of the towers, about P10, 000 worth of materials have been recovered, said Bambi Capulong, NGCP spokesperson.
“Though it has not yet been totally contained, but the situation has already been addressed by the NGCP security department. Medyo na control na siya ngayon compared to last year until January of this year,” Capulong said.

NGCP officials said the management has already entered into an agreement with junk shops advising them (junkshop owners) not to buy stolen materials especially those coming from NGCP towers or if not, report immediately to NGCP should someone tries to sell any parts of its tower mostly situated in areas far away from residences.

Just recently, NGCP management has rewarded the barangay chairman of Malagutay after carrying out a citizen’s arrest on minors who were caught in the act of stealing parts of one of its towers located in their community. — Jimmy Villaflores
