Two security escorts of a fishing boat were shot dead by gunmen believed to be Abu Sayyaf pirates off Pandukan Lantawan, Basilan last Thursday night.

The fatalities were identified as Noel Enolva and Faustino Labastida, married, both members of the Special Civilian Armed Auxiliary and security escorts of GMD 1 fishing boat of AMR Company.

A police report disclosed that Enolva and Labastida were escorting the GMD 1 while navigating along Pandukan, Lantawan, Basilan when three men aboard a pumpboat appeared and boarded the fishing boat.

Two of the three men, who identified themselves as Olsen and Bong, were armed with high powered firearms. They demanded some percentage share from the fishing boat's catch.

However, Labastida refused to give in to their demand that led to the armed confrontation.

Labastida was shot in the body and died where he fell. After shooting Labastida, the gunmen attacked Enolva who was at the pilot house. Enolva also sustained bullet wounds in the body and died on the spot.

The marauders boarded their pumpboat and sped away.

The bodies of the victims were brought to a funeral parlor for post mortem examination.
