The Festival de las Bellas y Flores, a showcase of beauty and creativity and a display of the city’s rich and colorful history and culture and held last night at the Paseo del Mar, formally culminated the month long summer festival in Zamboanga last night.

Eight of Zamboanga’s fashion designers competed with each other for the title in the competition of creativity, beauty and artistic ingenuity.

Mayor Celso Lobregat graced the activity which kicked off with the parade of arcos at 5p.m. from Ledesma Street (fronting City Fire Department) to Paseo del Mar where the show proper was held.

Festival de las Bellas y Flores, now on its 10th year,  is the city’s version of the Santacruzan, considered as the Queen of May festivities and the most colorful event dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.  The city government-initiated activity had 3 competitions: the most outstanding arco, the best gown and the prettiest senorita.

The arco competition was judged based on originality- 30%; creativity – 30%; craftsmanship – 25% and impact- 10%.  The prizes included P15,000 for the first placer, P10,000 for the second placer and P5,000 for the third placer.

Gown entries were judged based on craftsmanship- 45%; concept and design – 30%;  aesthetic appeal – 15% and impact – 10%. Prizes included P7,000 for the first placer, P5,000 for the second placer and PP3,000 for the third placer.

The prettiest señorita competition on the other hand was based on beauty of face- 50%; physique – 25%; poise and posture – 15% and stage presence – 10%. First prize was P5,000; second prize P3,000 while third prize was P3,000.  All winners also received plaques of appreciation each.

The city’s Summer Festival is intended to involve the community and provide wholesome entertainment to local residents as well as visitors during summer. It kicked off April 13 with the kite flying competition and juego de antes held at the Paseo del Mar. Other highlights during the month were the Dia de Ma’am Caling, Duathlon Challenge, Dia de Gen. Vicente S. Alvarez, Fiesta Engrande and many others. — Sheila Covarrubias
