Mayor Celso Lobregat has called on officials of public elementary and secondary schools and all other employees from the Division of City Schools to learn by heart Zamboanga’s history and competitiveness and help in the advocacy to promote the city.

The mayor issued the call during the 2nd Zamboanga Division Management Committee Meeting (DManCoM), May 24 at the Marcian Garden Hotel and attended by members of the promotional staff, Division administrative officers and all section chiefs, public school district supervisors, principals-in-charge of the district, and elementary and secondary school heads including teachers-in-charge.

“For us to be able to bring about the good, the best, the positive and the beautiful of Zamboanga City, it should come from us, especially the teachers, principals, superintendents down to the district supervisors”, the mayor said, as he took time to brief school officials about the city’s development strategies—starting from the city’s history to the city’s competitiveness.

He urged the school officials to be aware of the facts and details about Zamboanga and to share it with other people as well as to their young students.
The mayor stressed that Zamboanga will go nowhere if the residents themselves will not love and help promote Zamboanga .

In the same activity, the mayor emphasized about the creation of the Local School Board in every local government unit which is mandated under section 98 of the Local Government Code.

The LSB in Zamboanga is chaired by the mayor and composed of members that include the City Schools Superintendent, the chairman of the Council committee on education, City Treasurer, representative of the Federation of the Sangguniang Kabataan; duly elected president of the Parent-Teacher-Association Federation; duly elected president of the Teachers’ Organization; duly elected representative from non-academic groups.

Based on the law, the mayor stressed, the Department of Education shall consult with the LSB in the appointment of division superintendents, district supervisors, school principals and other school officials.

“We are emphasizing this here for your information and to set the records straight”, the mayor declared.

Other issues that the mayor tackled during the meeting were the need for school officials to properly take care of city-funded school buildings and classrooms; the need for school officials to help in the anti-dengue campaign, the official Zamboanga Hermosa audio visual presentation (AVP) and numerous other issues.

For his part, OIC City Schools Superintendent Pedro Natividad said the unceasing support and assistance of the city government under the leadership of Mayor Lobregat to public schools in the city is very enormous and have a great impact on the lives of the young students.

He said the city’s support and assistance should be reciprocated in terms of academic achievement, as he called on the school officials to do their best efforts to do their share.
