Zamboanga City High School (ZCHS),  the biggest high school in Region 9, conducted a  reading celebration  for the students enrolled in summer, 2012 called the Summer Reading Carnival.

According to Christine Y. Guinacaran,  the organizer of  this reading event, this reading activity  has three goals; to expose the students to other forms of  recreation that are more productive than computer games, to increase self esteem  and to develop the  love of reading  among the students.

The theme of this year’s  Summer Reading Carnival  is, “ Reading for fun and Learning”.   This was fully supported and given funding  by Dr. Felisa I. Munar, ZCHS Principal IV.  It is the thrust of  ZCHS to  encourage  activities such as this to motivate students to read and broaden their  thinking.

The carnival included the following competitions:  Speed reading, spelling bee, synonym, antonym and crossword puzzle.  There were around 70 “summerians”  who attended and almost 50 students took part in the contests.

The facilitators included the English teachers of ZCHS,  led by English Department  Head, Ms. Lillia S. Torres.
