Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday said the verdict on the impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona has been rendered and that it is time for the nation to move forward.

“The whole nation is glad that it is over, it is time to move forward”, the mayor said when City Hall reporters sought his reaction on the historic May 29 conviction of the highest magistrate of the land.

For the last five months, he said, people have concentrated on and followed the progress on the impeachment proceedings which was broadcast live on radio and television and that the senate has not been able to its legislative work.

“And so the verdict has been rendered and it is just a matter of accepting the verdict, especially by the chief justice and the whole country should move on”, he continued.

The mayor also hoped that there are lessons learned from Corona’s impeachment, as he, like numerous other national personalities including senator-judges, noted some lapses during the proceedings. “In fact, all (senator-judges) of them said that some of the evidences were gathered not in the legal way, that there was trial by publicity,” he said, stressing “it was a painful experience.”

Lobregat added: “The senator judges have rendered their verdict, the vote was 20-3 and the senators have explained their votes. So let’s move forward”.

The Philippine Senate on Tuesday voted 20-3 to remove the country’s top judge from office for betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Constitution when he failed to disclose $2.4 million in dollar deposits and additional P80 million in peso accounts in his Statement of Assets and Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) as required under section 17, article XI of the 1987 Constitution.

The promulgation of the judgment Tuesday, ended the 5-month impeachment trial, and was viewed by millions of people not only in the country but in other parts of the world.
