Two school infrastructures—a two-storey 8 classroom building each were unveiled and turned over to the Talon-talon National High School Friday afternoon right in time for the opening of classes on Monday, June 4.

Mayor Celso Lobregat and Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde led in the turnover of the newly-constructed school buildings—all worth P16.59 million—which are reflective of the city government’s continuing commitment to help improve the quality of education and ultimately ensure better future for the young generation.

City Schools Superintendent Pedro Melchor Natividad, Talon-talon National High School Principal Arlindela Ramirez and Talon-talon barangay chairman Munib Yusop received the city government’s donations on behalf of the students and the barangay residents.

The inauguration of the two school buildings yesterday came 5 months after Mayor Lobregat also turned over to the same school a covered court worth P2.49 million along with a Community Police Action Center (COMPAC) worth P1.2 million to the police and the barangay.

The new school buildings are expected to improve the student-classroom ratio at Talon-talon National High School, which is considered as one of the fastest growing public secondary school in terms of student population since its establishment in 2006.

During its first year of operation, the school had one two-storey, six-classroom school building housing 312 students, 6 teachers (all hired under the Local School Board) and a principal. It was established purposely to cater to high school students from the barangay and neighboring areas as well as to decongest the Zamboanga City High School-Main. Since then, another 2-storey, 6-classroom building and one 2-storey, 8-classroom building has been constructed to accommodate the constantly increasing student population.

As the mayor turned over the two school buildings yesterday, several other projects are ongoing in the barangay—the construction of a 3-storey 12 classroom building at the Talon-talon Elementary School, construction of library at the Talon-talon Elementary School and the construction of fence at the Talon-talon barangay hall among others. — Sheila Covarrubias
