Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo will join Mayor Celso Lobregat in distributing 60 computerS to the Department of Education (DepEd) this morning in City Hall as a result of the City Government’s feat as the Regional Winner in the Pamana ng Lahi Awards for exemplary performance in local governance.

The DILG-initiated Pamana ng Lahi Awards entitled the city government a P2 million cash prize which will be used for the implementation of local development projects in line with the priorities of the national government on the Millennium Development Goals.

The computers, complete with all accessories will be donated and turned over to 12 public elementary and secondary schools through City Schools OIC Superintendent Pedro Natividad.

Mayor Lobregat stressed that the provision of the computer units to public schools is in line with the goal of increasing the passing rate in the National Achievement Test (NAT) as well as increasing computer literacy. Specifically, the project will address the gaps in achieving primary education and aims to address Goal 2 of the MDG as it will increase the net enrolment ratio in primary education and boost the proportion of pupils and or students who finished schooling by stimulating interest on basic computer learning.

The project likewise hopes to supplement teaching strategies and enhance efficiency in teaching to achieve better literacy rates.

Recipient public schools are Labuan Central School, Talon-talon Elementary School, Talisayan Elementary School, Curuan Central School, Ayala Central School, Maasin Elementary School, Zamboanga East Central School and the national high schools located in Ayala, Sangali, Recodo, Talon-talon and Culianan.

The ceremony for the turnover of the computers will start at 8am with the welcome message from Mayor Lobregat and followed by a brief background of the Gawad Pamana ng Lahi award honoured to the city government by DILG-9 Director Paisal Abutazil.

Sec. Robredo will give his message prior to the signing of the deed of donation of the 60 computer units to the DePED by Mayor Lobregat and Natividad.
The turnover rite will follow, afterwhich Mr. Natividad will give his response. Vice Mayro Cesar Iturralde will give the closing remarks.

The Gawad Pamana ng Lahi award is in recognition of exemplary and noteworthy efforts of deserving LGUs through an award system. The award is conferred to LGUs for reasons of exemplary performance in administrative governance, social, economic and environmental governance drawn from the database of the Local Governance Performance Management System (LGPMS), Seal of good Housekeeping, International organization or National Government Agency.

Other than education, several other local development projects will be implemented by the city government utilizing part of the P2Million cash prize.  — Sheila Covarrubias
