ARMM OIC Governor Mujiv Hataman the other day led the groundbreaking of the site for an edifice in Lamitan City where Basilan based employees of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-ARMM) will be housed.

The site is a 5,000-square-meter lot at Sitio Lagasan, Kulay Bato, which is about one kilometer away from the town proper of Lamitan. The lot is part of a bigger property which is  planned as the possible site of ARMM-Basilan government complex following Executive Order No. 125 of then President Arroyo mandating all national agencies under ARMM in Basilan to be located in Lamitan as it is the capital town of the province, according to Mayor Roderick Furigay.

Most of the national agencies are found in Isabela City, but since the Queen City of Basilan (Isabela) is not under ARMM, Hataman ordered the implementation of the said E.O which was incorporated in Republic Act No.  9054 that creates the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

At present, Furigay said, the Department of Labor and Employment, Department of Transportation and Communication, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, MARINA office and DENR are already in Lamitan City.

“We have been waiting for this. We even requested the implementation of the law during the previous administration (ARMM government). But now, it is somehow a dream come true for the Lamiteños for it will help boost the morale and improve the economic activities of our town,” Furigay said as he expressed gratitude to Gov. Hataman who had earlier commited that Basilan will not be left behind under his administration.

As a counterpart, the local government of Lamitan will provide the lot where to house all the national offices and in this case, a big property in Kulay Bato was bought during Furigay’s first term of office for that purpose.

“Aside from the 5,000 square-meter lot for DPWH, we have more than two hectares reserved for other agencies that will come later,” Furigay said.

Witnessing the groundbreaking were DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo, Secretary Teresita “Ging” Deles of OPPAP and some cabinet secretaries of ARMM regional office led by Hataman. — Jimmy Villaflores
