Salaries for students hired under the second batch of the Summer Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) are now ready for distribution.

City Social Welfare and Development Officer Francisco Barredo, whose office facilitates the implementation of the SPES, said pertinent documents have already been processed and collection of the salaries will be done by barangays.

Salaries can be withdrawn from the City Treasurer’s Office in City Hall during office hours.

The SPES, which is a nationwide project, is jointly implemented by the City Government and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) regional office with a 60-40 percent sharing scheme.

The salary to be collected from the CTO represents the 60% share of the city government. The 40% counterpart from the DOLE will be paid by the DOLE regional office anytime soon.

To claim their salaries, the students should present their identification cards and certificate of identification which can be secured from the City Social welfare and Development Office at Pettit Barracks, according to Barredo.

The second batch SPES beneficiaries comprise 1,917 mostly high school students. The first batch composed of 1,570 college students received their salaries from the city government a week ago.

Each student gets P200 per day for a total of P4,000 for the 20-day work period.

The city government has allocated a total of P9 million for the program while the DOLE has allocated P5 million. A total of 3,487 students have been hired by the city government for this year’s SPES, now on its 20th year of implementation in Zamboanga. — Sheila Covarrubias
