City joins 151st Rizal b-day fete PDF Print E-mail

Mayor Celso Lobregat will spearhead the local celebration of the 151st birth anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal today in fitting rites set to be held at the Rizal monument fronting City Hall.

Themed “Rizalism: The key to national peace, truth and justice”, the ceremony will kick off at 8am with the flag raising ceremony to be participated by the different sectors in the city.

A wreath laying rite will follow with Mayor Lobregat leading the same followed by officials from national offices, military commands, city department heads, school heads and barangay officials.

The activity is a joint undertaking of the city government and the Order of the Knights of Rizal-Zamboanga City chapter led by area commander Domingo Falcasantos.

The Zamoboanga City High School-Main Choir will lead the doxology and the singing of the Philippine national anthem and Zamboanga Hermosa hymn.

The birth anniversary of the national hero is a nationwide observance with main event to be held at the Rizal Park in Manila with President Noynoy Aquino leading the ceremony.

Dr. Jose P. Rizal was born on June 19, 1861 in Calamba, Laguna to parents Francisco Mercado Rizal and Teodora Alonzoy Quintos. He was the seventh child in a family of 11 children (2 boys and 9 girls).

Historical records cite Rizal as the most prominent advocate for reforms in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. He is considered the country’s foremost national hero and the anniversary of his martyrdom on Dec. 30, 1896 is commemorated as a national holiday called Rizal Day. — Sheila Covarrubias
