The city government through the City Environment and Natural Resources Office invites all sectors in the city to the massive tree planting activity at the Climaco Freedom Park in Abong-abong on Monday, June 25 in celebration of Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga.

The occasion marks the start of the planting season in Zamboanga pursuant to Ordinance 281 and is in line with the nationwide observance of Arbor Day.

The mass tree planting activity will commence after the 7am commemorative program at the Climaco Freedom Park that will be graced by Mayor Celso Lobregat, the city’s congressional representatives, members of the City Council and officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and other concerned agencies.

Ordinance 281 enjoins the active participation of all sectors—government and non-government agencies and organizations in the tree planting activities.

After spearheading the tree planting event, Mayor Lobregat will then lead city and national agency officials in the tagging with metal plates, trees declared either as century or heritage trees.

Assistant City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Engr. Bisquera said different national and local government agencies, schools, military and police agencies and other law enforcement agencies and other institutions are expected to participate in the Arbor Day celebration.

The event is one of the city’s reforestation programs and forms part of the mitigating measures to disaster preparedness and climate change adaptation.

In previous years, hordes of people representing various sectors of the city joined in the celebration as a show of their commitment to environmental protection and preservation. —  Sheila Covarrubias
